WEDNESDAY’S QUESTION OF THE DAY

Question of the Day:  Before texting... before Facebook... before Snapchat... even before MySpace... there was AOL Instant Messenger.  It, ICQ, and MSN Messenger were the three big ones I can remember using.  AOL announced yesterday that it will shut down its Instant Messenger for good on December 15th.  Besides e-mail, what was the first instant messenger or social media network YOU used to connect with friends?  Do you still use it?  If not, do you still remember your screen name or number?  I remember that my ICQ number was 7701427, and that my AIM screen name was “DudeRancher” as I was in love with Blink 182’s “Dude Ranch” album when I first found it.  How about you?  (Broc) JOIN THE CONVERSATION ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE!

HOLLYWOOD

The Harvey Weinstein saga continues – and yesterday, I told you that shortly after The Weinstein Company fired co-founder Harvey on Sunday, stars started pouring out statements and distaste for the situation.  NOW, there’s A-listers accusing him of harassing them early on in their careers.  Gwyneth Paltrow said when she was 22, she was working with Weinstein on "Emma" - the role that took her from actress to star.  Before shooting began, Harvey summoned her to his suite at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel for a work meeting that began uneventfully, and ended with him placing his hands on her and suggesting they head to the bedroom for massages.  She refused his advances, and confided in Brad Pitt, her boyfriend at the time.  Mr. Pitt confronted Mr. Weinstein, and soon after, Weinstein warned her not to tell anyone else about his advances.  She said “I thought he was going to fire me."  Angelina Jolie said that during the release of “Playing by Heart” in the late 1990s, he made unwanted advances on her in a hotel room, which she rejected.  She said “I had a bad experience with Harvey Weinstein in my youth, and as a result, chose never to work with him again and warn others when they did."  And in the early 1990s, Mr. Weinstein asked Rosanna Arquette to stop by a hotel in Beverly Hills to pick up a script. “I’m not that girl,” she remembers telling him after he asked her for a massage.  Other actresses who have spoken out about alleged abuse by Weinstein include Dawn Dunning, Judith Godrèche, Katherine Kendall and Tomi-Ann Roberts just to name a few.

It's not just the women who are speaking out against Harvey Weinstein.  Matt Damon, who did several movies for and with Weinstein and his company, has broken his silence in the matter.  He said “We know this stuff goes on in the world,” Damon told Deadline. “I did five or six movies with Harvey. I never saw this. I think a lot of actors have come out and said, everybody’s saying we all knew. That’s not true. This type of predation happens behind closed door, and out of public view. If there was ever an event that I was at and Harvey was doing this kind of thing and I didn’t see it, then I am so deeply sorry, because I would have stopped it. And I will peel my eyes back now, [farther] than I ever have, to look for this type of behavior. Because we know that it happens. I feel horrible for these women and it’s wonderful they have this incredible courage and are standing up now.”  Weinstein helped launch Damon and Ben Affleck’s careers in the mid-1990s by championing and executive producing Good Will Hunting. Affleck has also condemned Weinstein, saying that he is “saddened and angry that a man who I worked with used his position of power to intimidate, [harass] and manipulate many women over decades.”

If you've been considering a subscription to Hulu, now might be the time to jump in head first.  As fall television season creeps up and its main competitor Netflix has raised its prices, Hulu is dropping the cost of its cheapest monthly subscription to $5.99.  The limited-time offer is available to new and returning customers, and only locks in the $5.99 price for the first year. After that, the price will jump back up to the normal $7.99 per month price for the subscription with advertisements. Those interested need to jump on the offer by January 9.
