The Vinyard Road overpass near Kimberly and Eden is closed this morning after being struck by the arm of an excavator that was being pulled by a truck on a trailer. It happened just before 1 yesterday afternoon along I-84 in the eastbound lanes of travel. Drivers using the overpass will have to take the frontage roads to connect to another exit while crews check for structural damage. The overpass is closed until further notice.

Another suspect connected to the ambush at Boise’s Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center has pleaded guilty. In March, Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour led police on an attack in order for Meade escape from custody. The incident left three correctional officers injured. Tia Garcia of Twin Falls has admitted to helping the men escape. She could be spending 25 years in prison when she is sentenced in December. Tonia Huber of Filer is also facing similar charges.

Idaho will stop temporarily placing foster children with complex needs in short-term rentals, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. The Department said it was able to halt the practice because there are relatively more foster families compared to foster children, and a new center in Payette has absorbed demand. In 2020 and 2021, more Idaho children entered foster care.

A group of women are suing the state of Idaho over abortion bans in situations of pregnancy complications. The state’s near-total ban makes performing an abortion a felony at any stage of pregnancy unless it is “necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman. The trial for the lawsuit began in Boise yesterday.

One Idaho senate hopeful is speaking out about how God supposedly told her to run and to defeat the Republican candidate so the Democrat would win. Kala Tate who ran as an independent for District 26 has reportedly said that the goal of her campaign was to steal votes from Republican Laurie Lickley in order to re-elect Democrat incumbent Ron Taylor, who won by a 1.6% margin.

SPORTS

The accolades continue to pour in for Heisman hopeful Ashton Jeanty. Boise State’s star running back on Tuesday was named a semifinalist for the 88th Maxwell Award. It was announced Jeanty is one of 16 semifinalists for the annual award, which is presented to the college football player of the year. Former Washington quarterback and current Atlanta Falcon Michael Penix Jr. won the 2023 award. Jeanty ran for 208 yards and three touchdowns on a career-high 34 carries in Boise State’s 28-21 win over conference foe Nevada on Saturday at Albertsons Stadium. The Broncos visit San Jose State this weekend riding seven straight victories.

There will be six teams competing in the Idaho High School Playoff semi-finals beginning tomorrow. Number 4 ranked Kimberly Bulldogs hope to upset number 1 ranked sugar-Salem for the second time this season. The Bulldogs upset them earlier in the season 17-14 on the road, which started a six-game win streak.

In college basketball, Six Broncos reached double-digits in scoring, led by Javan Buchanan with 16 points, as Boise State returned to the win column with a 100-65 victory over Corban last night at ExtraMile Arena. The Broncos scored 68 points inside the paint, while their defense forced Corban into 14 turnovers.
Two freshmen made an impact all season for the College of Southern Idaho Volleyball Team and were recognized for their contribution on the court. Hazuna Akishige was named the Region 18 Libero of the Year, earning first-team accolades. Mina Benucci was named to the Region 18 Second Team.

The Idaho vandal’s women basketball welcomes back Walla Walla University today in Moscow. The Vandals are 0-2 on the season while The Wolves are 1-1 on the season. Idaho fell to WSU Sunday afternoon, while Walla Walla fell to Eastern Washington on the road Saturday. The two teams meet for the 2nd time in a series that dates back to 2021. The game is a regular-season game for Idaho, but an exhibition game for Walla Walla.

For college volleyball The Idaho State Bengals and the northern Colorado bears will be in a battle for first place in the Big Sky. The Number 1 and Number 2 skirmish happens tomorrow at 7 in the Reed Gym.
