Twin Falls County Commissioners have approved a 9.7% hike in health insurance premiums for the upcoming fiscal year. While the county covers employee premiums, dependents cost up to $1,300—posing hiring challenges. The increase stems from high claim usage, now exceeding 100%.

A federal funding freeze is threatening education access for hundreds of Idaho migrant farmworkers and families. Programs are shutting down including at Boise State due to stalled funds.

Heads up for Burley-area drivers—temporary detours are coming to I-84 near the old State Highway 27 bridge. Starting today, traffic will shift to a temporary median route. Nighttime closures hit July 31 for westbound and August 1 for eastbound, both from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Detours will be clearly marked.

Idaho gas prices held steady this week at $3.48 per gallon, according to AAA—six cents higher than a month ago but nine cents less than a year ago. The national average is $3.14. Idaho remains seventh-highest in the country for fuel costs.

Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador announced the felony conviction of Woody Roberts for unemployment fraud. Roberts falsely claimed benefits for 56 weeks, receiving over $57,000. He was sentenced to up to eight years and ordered to repay the full amount.

Families in Cassia and Minidoka counties now have access to free mental health support, thanks to a $289,800 grant from Intermountain Community Care Foundation. The three-year “Empowering Parents” initiative will provide emotional health resources for parents, students, and educators.

A former deputy attorney general claims she was fired for whistleblowing, raising ethical concerns about Idaho AG Raúl Labrador’s leadership. Labrador denies wrongdoing, saying she acted in bad faith. The state is now seeking to dismiss her lawsuit ahead of trial.

The Great Salt Lake is nearing dangerously low levels again, now around 4,192 feet—just above its historic low. Officials warn continued drought and overuse could trigger ecosystem collapse, toxic dust storms, and harm to wildlife and industry.

The Burley Green Sox are your 2025 Legion “A” Idaho State Champions, crushing the Prairie Cardinals 16-0 in the title game. The win capped a dominant run—but Burley was already set for Regionals as the pre-determined host.  Now, the Prairie Cardinals will take Idaho’s official bid to the Northwest Regional, held August 7th through 11th in Burley. Teams from Oregon, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana will compete in the eight-team bracket.  Burley enters Regionals with a stellar 36-5 record, looking to keep their postseason momentum rolling.

The College of Southern Idaho Cheer squad made history this year in the NJCAA’s first-ever sanctioned season for cheerleading—finishing third in the nation on the court and earning Academic Team honors with a 3.42 GPA.  Jaritza Granados led the team with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning First Team Academic All-American status, while teammates Jessi Hancock and Sydni Visconti made the Second Team.  CSI Cheer also brought home two runner-up finishes at USA Nationals and will look to build on their success in the upcoming season.

In just its first season of competition, the College of Southern Idaho Men’s Soccer Team made an impact both on the field and in the classroom—earning NJCAA Academic Team honors with a 3.09 GPA.  Two Golden Eagles—Alfonso Vigil and Kadin Reese—were also named NJCAA Third Team Academic All-Americans for earning GPAs between 3.60 and 3.79.  CSI Men’s Soccer is gearing up to kick off its second official season next week, aiming to build on a strong academic and athletic foundation.

Cowboys and cowgirls, get ready! The Black Canyon Stock Show and Rodeo is back for round two as part of the Gem/Boise County Fair — running July 31st through August 2nd.  Last year’s debut delivered three unforgettable nights of rodeo thrills, and this summer promises to be even bigger. Each night kicks off with pre-rodeo events like mutton bustin’ and buckin’ ponies at 7 p.m., followed by the main rodeo action at 8.
