📰 CRIME & COURTS

  • ⚖ Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to murdering four University of Idaho students, avoiding the death penalty. Despite his admission, no motive was revealed. Families, especially Kaylee Goncalves’ relatives, say the state has failed them. Sentencing is set for July 23.
  • 🚗 A Twin Falls woman, Krystal Burton, was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 3 years’ probation for leaving the scene after hitting a 4-year-old boy last fall. The child recovered, but her actions were labeled “callous.” License revoked for one year.
  • 💰 Michael Malson, a former City of Shoshone employee, faces three felony charges for misuse of public money. Prosecutors allege he took cash from the city dump station on three occasions. Preliminary hearing: July 8.
  • 🚲 A child was critically injured after being hit by a truck while riding a bike last night in Boise, near Nez Perce and Pacific Street. The child was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating.

🛣 TRAVEL & INFRASTRUCTURE

  • 🧳 AAA says 410,000 Idahoans will travel for the 4th of July, part of a record-setting 72 million Americans hitting the road. Expect major congestion today and Sunday. Idaho gas averages $3.43/gallon—down 17 cents from last year. AAA urges: “pack your patience.”
  • 🚧 Westbound ramps at I-84 and Highway 27 close Monday at 6 p.m. through July 24 for repaving. Detours are posted. Idaho Transportation Department urges caution around crews.

☢ HEALTH & POLICY

  • 🧬 The U.S. Senate passed a bill expanding the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. If the House approves, Idahoans affected by Cold War nuclear tests may receive up to $100,000. The bill would extend RECA through 2028.

🚒 FIREFIGHTER AMBUSH UPDATE

  • 🙏 Dave Tysdal, the lone survivor of Sunday’s ambush near Coeur d’Alene, is now in stable condition. He’s off the ventilator and talking after multiple surgeries. Two other firefighters were killed. The 20-year-old suspect died at the scene.

🐎 EVENTS

  • 🎆 Branded Bonanza arrives in Nampa for the 4th of July weekend, July 4–6 at the Ford Idaho Horse Park. Nearly 70 youth and adult trainers will showcase wild horses and burros. Events start at 7 a.m. daily. Trained animals will be available for adoption—BLM staff on-site.

🏃 SPORTS

  • 💪 Ironman 70.3 returns to Boise on Saturday, July 26 after a 10-year hiatus. Includes a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run. Volunteers still needed. ESPN’s “50 States in 50 Days” will highlight the race on July 28.
  • 🏈 Boise State’s Kage Casey named First Team Preseason All-American by Walter Camp—only Group of 5 player to make the list. He helped Boise rush for a program-record 3,365 yards and excelled in pass blocking.

    • Game 1: 16-0 behind a no-hitter from Bridger Phillips (also 2 hits, RBI).
    • Brett Paxton went 4-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBIs.
    • Game 2: 8-3, Paxton again 4-for-4 (8-for-8 total).
  • 🍀 Burley Green Sox A defeated Minico Storm A, 10-7. Jacoby Roe had 3 hits, 3 RBIs.
